Adventure 01 B: Trouble in Stormhaven

Characters
Garet Jax is a fledgling mage in the town of Stormhaven. He is asked by his superior in the Stormhaven Wizard's guild to recover a magical tome, known as the Ebony Grimoire that a magic user called Popkarpoff, is thought to have "borrowed". Garet agrees to the mission.
He cases the joint and decides that a night time reconnaissance is in order. When it is dark he waits until the street is clear then uses spider climb to scale the outer wall. He smashes a single window pane to gain entrance to a bedroom where he finds some papers that seem to incriminate Poppof. It appears that he has had some dealings with other evil magic users concerning the creation of various types of undead. There is also a goatshead symbol on one of the documents that alludes to some kind of strange brotherhood.
He leaves the room and heads into a hallway which is protected by several skeletons and tries to barge past them. He fails and they animate and attack. Calling on the Source he manages to turn the skeletons and escape the room.
The next room is a laboratory and he quickly sets to work searching for the magical tome. Unfortunately he doesn't check behind the door where a bone bat waits. As soon as the door attacks the undead sentinel attacks but Garet manages to fight it off and slay it. He finds the tome, several other valuable books and the wizards own spellbook which is chained to a pedestal. Garet finds some acid amongst the various scientific paraphernalia and uses it to melt the chain fastening the spellbook. He then puts it in a sack and after making sure that the road is clear hurls a flask of burning oil into the room, to cover his tracks, jumps out the window and then feather falls to the ground. He hides the books then tries to help the Watch put out the fire. Unfortunately it is in the poorer part of town and several more of the tightly packed buildings catch alight. The Watch spends the night battling the blaze but by morning some 24 buildings, a city block, are destroyed and many left homeless.
His superior, Nelsek, is grateful that the book is returned
but doesn't ask too many questions. As a reward for his help he
does train Garet to become a 2nd level magic user and then
suggest that he leaves town. He gives him a letter of
introduction to a band of adventurers, working for the Winter
Wolves Guild, that has been sent east to hunt down some bandits
and suggests Garet joins them ASAP. Apparently a local councillor
lost several properties in the fire and is conducting an
investigation into the arson. Also, the mage Popkarpoff is
incensed at the loss of his house and main spellbook, and
suspects an inside job as the Ebony Grimoire has somehow
reappeared in the Wizard's guild. It seems best if Garet were to
leave town and lay low for a while. Heeding his mentor'sa dvice
Garet departs with all due haste.
