Leah's Campaign Chronicles (1986-88)

What follows is a rather brief narrative of the events happened in an epic campaign that began back in the Autumn of 1986 and ran almost weekly for about two- three years. The campaign began in the lands of Candalefeor, a world that Ian and I were to jointly develop. By the time the campaign begun Ian's part of the world was ready, mine unfortunately was still undergoing change, mainly due to the fact that I was trying to build around several modules I liked rather than the modules around the world. My version of Candalefeor continued to change several times as new ideas gripped me but I eventually gave up and returned to one of my favourite settings, Greyhawk instead. It was unfortunate that one of the key members of our gaming group, Paul Milthorpe, died tragically of Asthma several weeks before this campaign got underway, he was a great AD&D player and was sorely missed, and would have loved the adventures that occurred.

Over the course of this campaign our gaming group shrunk further from five to three (Ian, my brother Jas and me) as the "real" world, and university took its toll on players. However the core of the three of us continued every Sunday afternoon for two years and we had a blast. What began as a small campaign in Ian's own land soon become an epic as the adventurers travelled to Greyhawk and became embroiled in several of the classic AD&D adventures, most noticably the A1-4 (Slavers) series and the infamous G-D-Q. The battles against the fire giants were especially epic and that section of the campaign took more than six months of real time to complete, the battles in the entrance foyer to the giant king's halls were bloody and each time the heroes were forced to retreat to lick their wounds and plan new strategies. It is unfortunate that we failed to keep better records back then but Ian diligently recorded the highlights of each adventure each week and I hope that his rather brief notes capture some of the flavour and majesty of this campaign, which will forever be one of my favourites.

Leah is born in Pontanine (lower upper class). At the age of 17, he leaves home and joins a band of mercenaries.

A year later (now a Fi 4), leaves the mercenaries and meets up with a band of adventurers - Morningcraft (Hu Cl), Thorn Glitterbrook (Gm Fi/Ill) and Felix (Hu Ca). The group travel to Crechecrest.

Leah sees the famed sword Widowcross in Crechecrest town hall and suggests to the others that they steal it. Seizing the sword the party disposes of the town guard and slips out of Crechecrest via the sewers.

Heading north east, out of the Jechaine Empire, the foursome are attacked by vengeful knights from Crechecrest. The knights are captured and forced to yield. The party continues northwards cross country.

On the edge of the Empire, all but Leah are captured by a large tribe of Bugbears. Leah frees them by assassinating the Bugbear king. Leah gains an instrument of the bards - Anstruth Harp

Travelling through the Southron Mountains, the foursome discover a village of Gnomes. After numerous expeditions to a group of nearby caves (in which Morningcraft is killed and Barl (Hu Bn) joins) the party leaves the gnomes (Leah having turned Thief then to a Bard). Thorn and Leah however, stay behind. Some where in the cave expeditions Barl lost his eyebrows for smashing potions.

Meeting up with Kaeldark (1/2E, Ra) and Eugene Onegin (Hu, Mk) the party continue north. The party are attacked by a blue dragon. It is slain and Barl fashions a helmet from its skull.

Leah and Thorn set out northwards a week after the rest of the party left the gnomes. This wasn't actually played (as I took over DMing just before this point), but was added into the history to explain Leah turning up in Toleim.

Leaving the mountains, the party set out across the Burning Sands, a desolate desert. Finding a scroll hidden in an old temple the party discover the whereabouts of ancient ruins in a hidden valley - Gersidi.

Eventually finding the ruins at Gersidi the party start to explore them. Kaeldark eats some Ultimax fungus and turns into a raving lunatic. He turns on the party. Only Eugene survives. Actually, Craig, not liking the idea of Kaeldark becoming a mound of fungus decided that if he was going to die the rest of the party would too.

Heading north through the Hawkshead Mountains, Eugene eventually arrives in The Kingdom of the City. Sheltering in a village he meets up with Chance Shannon (Hu Ca), Caradin (1/2E Ra) and Thud (Hu Bn). The four get involved in a fight with some slavers (1/2 Orcs) and manage to free a man named Robert Durund (who turns out to be the usurped prince of the kingdom).

Leah and Thorn arrive in Toleim (the capital city of the Kingdom of the City).

Robert tells the party that they must head back to Gersidi to recover some valuable magic items that will enable him to regain his kingdom.

Arriving in the valley the party explores the tombs. Killing Taron Gersidi (a vampire), Caradin gains the sword Deathkiss, and Eugene, Viscor's Bone. After defeating the Manfro creature, Robert finds the Ultimax death-stone. This time no one eats any fungus.

The party head back to Toleim to kill Clinschor, the usurper.

Thorn, having left Toleim arrives in Exbir-Fax, a city in a kingdom to the east.

Taking part in the annual joust, Caradin defeats one of Clinschor's black knights making an enemy. He also gains a heart, that of Lady Niva Morgan. Thus gains second place in the high melee, being narrowly defeated in the final. He does however, win over 20,000 gold from gambling.

That night, while Caradin and Chance stage a diversion, the others slip into the royal palace and kill Clinshor. Caradin and Chance are captured though.

The black knights and the Orcish garrison take refuge in the Bastion (the city castle). Chance and Caradin are thrown in the dungeons.

Thud and Eugene lay siege to the Bastion with the help of 300 mercenaries. With the breaking of a hole in one of the castle walls, Thud leads the charge of the mercenaries into the Bastion. A fierce battle rages.

The Orcish garrison is defeated but the black knights escape northwards. Caradin and Chance are found and healed. Thud, Caradin and Eugene are knighted.

Robert Durund is restored to the throne. Caradin is married to Niva but because of the jealousy this arouses in one Wilfred Glayge (Hu Ca) he is murdered on his wedding day.

Caradin is resurrected but cannot act against Wilfred as there is no evidence.

The party leaves Toleim and heads northwards out of the kingdom.

Arriving at Pentecost's Tooth, the foursome meet the Clerics of Bennu the Unlucky. Eugene climbs the tooth and is hailed as the new messiah by the clerics.

The party heads across the open basin to the Spike, the home of Tarabeth, the last grey dragon.

Descending into the depths of the Spike, Chance steps on a trap and is crushed by logs. The other three continue on and confront Tarabeth. When all appears lost, Thud throws one of the grey stones (a magical device found in the Spike) at Tarabeth. It ignites, killing the dragon and Eugene and Thud.

Caradin returns to civilization with the dragon's treasure and the bodies of his companions. Thud and Eugene are brought back to life by Bennu's clerics.

Thud is possessed with a terrifying fear of dragons.

Leah rejoins the party.

The party heads eastwards towards Exbir-Fax. Caradin remains behind.

Passing south or the Great Wood, the party discovers the lair of a Green Dragon, it holds as its prisoner a beautiful elven maiden. After slaying the dragon, Leah is killed by a cursed scroll. The rest of the party are captured by the maiden's people.

The party explain their way out of the elven prison and manage to resurrect Leah.

A day from Exbir-Fax, the party are attacked by a large group of cavaliers. The cavaliers demand the return of Widowcross. After a short fight (which the party win), it is found that it is a very bad practical joke perpetrated by Thorn.
The party arrives in Exbir-Fax.

The town of Exbir-Fax is besieged by an army of goblins and gnolls from the kingdom of the Slavers Brotherhood. The party are hired by some town officials to kill the gnollish leader.

Sneaking into the enemy camp, the party overcome the gnollish chief, knock him unconscious and present him to the city officials.

The army laying siege to Exbir-Fax disbands after seeing their leader beheaded on the town walls. The city of Exbir-Fax and its allies declare war on the Slavers Brotherhood. The party are recruited to travel into the Slavers kingdom and assassinate the Slave lords.

After travelling through the Slavers kingdom posing as traders the party sneaks into the Slave lords castle and there confront the lords. A long and hard battle ensues but at the end of it all the Slave lords are most are killed.

Hearing tell of hundreds of slaves being held in the wilderness, the party, though hurt sorely set out to free the slaves.

Finding the secret location of the underground slave pens (i.e., following a map found the Slave lords castle) the party fight with Aspis guards. The guards are killed but only Leah remains able to fight. Leah rescues a few slaves and bids them to take Thud and Eugene back to the Exbir-Fax army (now advancing on the Slavers castle). Leah then heads back into the slave pits.

Freeing all the slaves, Leah fights a running battle with the remaining slave lords and aspis. He kills all but the last aspis which knocks him unconscious and captures him. Widowcross is lost to Leah.

Leah is ransomed from the aspis for 10,000 gold pieces. The party are heroes.

The party are recruited by the duke of Exbir-Fax to find out what force is disrupting trade routes through the doom marsh.

The party track down the evil force to Saccaranth (a vampire lizard-man king) and his minions.

Entering Saccaranth's tomb the party confront Saccaranth (who is sorely injured in the encounter). Leah is the only survivor, but on the way out of the tomb he is attacked and killed by Trolls (somewhat unfairly - I still believe that was not a valid random encounter).

Back in Toleim, Caradin hears of Leah, Thud and Eugene's deaths. I take over DMing from Craig.

Caradin is summoned to Robert Durund who is on his deathbed. Robert tells of how the forces of evil are gathering against the kingdom and that Caradin and the others must fight it. He then dies. Caradin realises that to beat the evil, Leah, Eugene and Thud must be brought back to life.

Caradin meets Brall Crouch (Hu, Fi) and Dawn Darkwater (Hu, Pa). The three of them set out to Boom Skerry (a rock island on which a Genie is said to live), which has been recently taken over by Gnolls.

The party arrives at Boom Skerry. Rowing out to the island at night, the party sneaks into the Gnollish fort and find the entrance to a secret dungeon.

Exploring the dungeon and after defeating a drider the threesome discover the Genie. Freeing the Djinni from his prison the party are granted three wishes. Caradin uses them to return Leah, Thud and Eugene to life. The three appear on the spot, naked but otherwise unharmed.

Brall Crouch leaves the party (i.e., Tony is pleased to have Eugene back).

Leaving the island the party learns that a great battle for control of Toleim rages. It is between the nobles families (since it has been discovered that Robert is dead). Wilfred Glayges family wins control of the crown.

The party head northwards through the LeFay marsh. On a monster bash.

Discovering a strange monolith (which turns out to be the legendary anvil of the dwarvish demi-god Brest) the party enter (from the top). It eventuates that the monolith is occupied by approximately one hundred Cyclopskin. A fierce battle rages and the party manage to kill the Cyclopskin.

The Cyclopskin leader possessed a strange cage. Dawn took it with him (I'm still impressed that Jason actually realised this was important).

Leaving the marsh the party head to Pentecost's tooth. While there, Eugene successfully manages to talk to his god (Thoth) and it is discovered that the great illusionist Arathgal (who lives in Doriath) knows all about the great evil that Robert mentioned. The problem is that Arathgal has not left his home for the last 200 years.

Arriving in Doriath, the party enter Arathgal's tower, a maze of passageways and traps. Finding their way to the top, the party confront Arathgal and he tells them of Hades, the Daemon who controls all of Tarterus. Arathgal asks the party to seek out the gem shards of power (it turns out the shards fit into the cage Dawn has), the only power that can defeat Hades.

Thorn returns to the party at this point (i.e., reinforcements are required).

Retrieving the shards from 'the naga temple' and 'the harpies garden' (in which Thorn dies and is transported to Tartarus) the party heads to Daemons crown, a rock formation that houses the gate to Tarterus. Fighting their way into the crown Caradin stupidly says Hades name out loud. The daemon hears and appears in front of the party.

Hades destroys the gem shards of power (which only work on Tarterus) and then returns to his domain. I think the last entry is rather polite considering the debacle that this turned into. This encounter also featured the 'longest charge in history' by Jeff's lawful good cavalier but I don't mention any of his characters in this part of the history as he was averaging one Cavalier character (with same name, statistics and hit points) per game session.

In Tarterus, Thorn gives cheek to the boatman Charon while crossing the river styx. Thorn is thrown overboard into the river and his soul is forever lost. For the better I say. I still haven't forgiven him over that last practical joke.

Leah leaves the party at this instant and goes to Doriath to live with Linden (Hu, Female, Th) the leader of Doriath's thieves guild. Eugene returns to Pentecost's tooth. At this stage Tony ended his D&D career (much to his mothers pleasure I'm sure) taking up the ways of the thespian. Whether or not this had anything to do with the appalling fiasco that occurred within the Daemons crown who can say.

Caradin discovers bad news from Toleim. Wilfred Gayge, his mortal enemy, has proclaimed Caradin the murderer of Robert Durund and taken Caradin's wife into custody.

Seeking out Wilfred, Caradin challenges him to mortal combat. Caradin is knocked from his horse and is then killed. Dawn is captured but Thud escapes.

Dawn is held prisoner in Wilfred's home but is freed (and banished from the kingdom).

Caradins body is transported to Wayfork tower (also where Niva Morgan is held) for burial.

Dawn and Thud meet up and discover where Caradin's body is.

Fighting their way into Wayfork tower, Thud and Dawn retrieve Caradin's body and rescue Niva Morgan. The head back to Pentecost's Tooth.

At Pentecost's Tooth, Caradin is resurrected by Eugene's Clerics.

Dawn suggests that the party try and kill Hades again. Caradin disagrees, he wants Wilfred's blood. An argument starts, Thud steps in and Caradin is killed. The worst case of stubborn brothers I have ever seen. Incidentally, I don't know why I didn't just kill you all at this point and start again with a new campaign.

With much persuading on Thud's part, the party decide to head off to the lands of Greyhawk. Leah is collected from Doriath and the threesome buy passage from Ainur. Eugene stays at Pentecost's Tooth. Craig is still pissed at losing Caradin so decides to start DM'ing again.

After an exciting journey by sea (2 months later), the party arrives in Safetown on the Wild Coast, a region of Greyhawk.

Hearing rumours of a fabulous sword (named Greif) hidden somewhere within the Gnarley forest the party heads northwards to Narwell.

Arriving in Narwell, Leah seeks out a ranger to lead the party into the Gnarley forest. Leah finds an experienced half elf call Groft. Groft was only ever an NPC. I think he was going to be Craig's new character when he stopped DMing.

Thud gets involved in a barroom brawl and is thrown in jail for the night.

The party heads northwards into the forest.

Attacked by giant poisonous spiders, Groft is killed and Thud is dragged off of his horse into a complex of caves. Exploring the caves, Dawn finds Thud's dead body.

Returning to Narwell with Thud and Groft's bodies, Dawn and Leah search for a Cleric to resurrect the two. Unfortunately, none is available. Craig is still pissed and has Thud right where he wants him.

The two journey to Hardby. There they locate a Cleric who resurrects Groft and Thud. Groft decides to give up adventuring and leaves the party. Craig has calmed down.

Returning to Narwell the party again head into the Gnarley forest. Encountering a group of Elves, Lead asks if they have heard of the sword 'Grief'. The elves say they have and that it is hidden in the rock formation known as the crystal tree. This region has been recently taken over by an evil dragon and its servants.

Entering the crystal tree, the party explore.

After defeating a devil (Nafanshee) and the dragons henchman (a fire giant), the party attack the evil dragon. Dawn and Thud are killed by its breath. Leah narrowly escapes death and kills the dragon. Leah gains the sword Grief. I think it was a red dragon but can't remember.

Returning to Narwell Leah buys a mule then returns to the forest to collect the bodies of Dawn and Thud. However, Thud has been eaten so Leah can only return with Dawns (slightly chewed) body. I guess Craig never really forgave Thud for killing Caradin.

Leah travels to Hardy and there manages to find a cleric to resurrect Dawn.

While Dawn is resting, Leah gets a singing job in a Tavern. There he meets Hansell (1/2E Cl) and Telo (Hu Mu). They join the party.

Hearing that the duke of Harby wants adventurers for dangerous work, the party volunteer. The duke wants the party to retrieve a gem (an artifact) rumoured to be hidden somewhere within an abandoned wizards tower, named by locals the Ghost Tower of Inverness.

Travelling to the tower and overcoming all of its perils (including Meduase, Giants, Otyugh and Ixtichil) the party behold the sight of the gem. However, it is surrounded by a force field.

Hansell's and Leah's souls are trapped by the gem. Telo and Dawn manage to break the force field and all the party are teleported back to Hardby.

The court magician retrieves Leah and Hansell's souls from the gem. The party are granted a wish each. Dawn wishes to know the location of a Holy Avenger sword - a vision of a tower is shown to him.

Travelling into the <I don't know its name> swamp the party discover the tower.

Entering the tower, the party are attacked by evil men. A great battle takes place. In the end, only Leah is left alive. Exploring the tower, Leah finds the Holy Avenger sword but is struck dead by a poison dart trap.

Fortunately, Telo wears a ring of regeneration, so she slowly brings the party back to life.

After Dawn retrieves the Holy Avenger (the rest of the party grab all the other treasure) the party leaves the swamp for Hardby.

Acting on a scroll found in the tower the party decide to travel to Loftwick (some 900 miles to the south west beside the Crystalmist mountains). Oh oh, I can smell giants approaching. Before they leave Hardby, Leah hires a hench-woman named Seane Highwater (Hu, Fi).

After travelling by road for over a month the party arrives in the winter festival at Loftwick. After speaking to the captain of the guard, the party are hired to travel into the Crystalmist mountains and punish a group of giants living there, and find evidence to say whether or not any great evil force is behind the raids (the scroll found in the wizards tower showed the location of this tribe).

Travelling to the mountains the party establish a camp overlooking the giants fort. Over a period of a week, the party launch four raids into the fort killing over 60 hill giants in the process. They also find a device that will transport them to another region in Greyhawk.

Returning to Loftwick, the party are ordered to use the device to discover the source of the attacks. Reluctantly (other wise being put to death), the party agrees.

Using the strange device, the party are transported to an icy region (deep in the Crystalmist mountains). Exploring the region, the party discover a group of caves - the halls of the frost giant chief Jarl. Before entering the caves, the party discover the lair of a Rhemorhaz. Killing the hideous creature, the party find a ring of three wishes and a sword. Seane keeps the sword and Leah, Telo and Hansell are each granted a wish.

Exploring the caves, the party takes a wrong turn and walks into the lair of two white dragons! Dawn bravely charges them both while the party beats a hasty retreat. Dawn manages to kill the more powerful dragon before succumbing to the others breath. However, Leah, using his wand of wonder (I think he picked this up in the wizards tower where Dawn got the Holy Avenger) manages to turn the remaining dragon to stone.

Leaving the frost giants caves, the party dig a snow cave and with the help of Telo's ring of regeneration Dawn is brought back to life.

The next day, penetrating deep into the caves, Leah and Telo, combining spells kill about 60 assorted giants. Dawn is captured however (knocked unconscious and left behind) by four Ogre mages posing as Kobolds.

Dawn is eventually rescued but the frost giant leader (Jarl) escapes to the hell furnaces and the hall of the fire giant king. Leah finds a room that teleports anything in it to the gates of the fire giant kings lair, a big slag heap.

The party use the teleport to travel to Smaugs lair.

Entering the slag heap lair, the party are surprised and attacked by about 30 fire giants and hell hounds. Finding themselves forced back, Telo, Leah, Seanne and Hansell manage to teleport back to Loftwick. Dawn however (when reminded he is a Paladin and is effectively sentenced to death by the DM), refuses to leave and after a valiant fight, is killed.

The party meet up with Gregor (E Fi/Mu) and Yochall (E Fi/Mu). With these reinforcements the party teleport back to the fire giants lair. Before entering, the party see Dawns head on a stake. Taking the giants by surprise the party penetrate deep into the giants lair. Many giants are killed as well as a few drow elves - the source of the evil?
Seane is killed by a drow elf.

Having discovered the source of the evil the party head back to Loftwick. Gregor and Yochall retire from adventuring.

I think at this point Jason and Ian managed to convince Craig that they weren't tough enough to take on the Drow. So everybody decided that the slavers series would be fun to have a go at.

Leaving Loftwick, heading towards Safetown, the party are ambushed by Ogre mages posing as humans (suckered again!). Hansell is killed, but Leah and Telo escape.

Travelling to Safetown then Highport, Leah and Telo meet up with Brother Tay (Hu Mk) and Keelin the Bold (1/2E Fi). There they learn of the slave lords, a well organised chaotic organisation (I know the previous statement does note make sense) who deal in the trade of humans, who have been raiding the wild coast and taking slaves for years.

The party decide to put an end to the slave lords. Breaking into a temple in the centre of Highport, the party discover documents leading to a second lair in the heart of the Drachensgrab Hills.

Following the path set down in the documents, the party discover a keep, garrisoned by Hobgoblins, a dispersal point for caravans heading towards the slave lords erie.

Penetrating the outer fortifications, the party eventually find their way into the dungeons below the keep where they confront one of the slave lords, Markessa and her henchmen.

Markessa escapes, but the party after ransacking her quarters discover clues leading to the slave lords erie.
The clues lead to a series of caves in the Drachensgrab highlands. After overcoming many traps the party find their way through the cave system to the slavers stronghold, the town of Stoneheim, located on a volcanic plug set in the centre of a crater lake.

Disguising themselves as slavers, the party enter Stoneheim. An agent of Keoland dressed as a beggar tells them of a secret entrance into the slave lords citadel.

Entering via a secret door leading to the city sewer system, the party eventually locate the slave lords lair.
There the party confront five of the slave lords, and in the ensuing battle all but one of the slave lords (including Markessa) are killed.

The party are overwhelmed by the slave lords minions and imprisoned beneath Drachen keep. Mighty suspicious ending if you ask me.

Left to die in the caves beneath the keep, all of the parties resources (and a little luck) are used to escape a terrible fate (the volcano has erupted).

Escaping through a waterway, the party realise to escape the volcanic island they must travel to Stoneheim and steal a boat. Unfortunately, the only serviceable boat is in the service of the slave lords.

Attacking swiftly though sorely wounded (Brother Tay was killed), the party kill the slave lords and escape the island.

The party return to Safetown.

Hearing of giant raids in the Yeomanry, the party once more travel to the accursed realm of the fire giant king.

Seeing Dawns head still impaled on a stake, Leah has an idea of how to resurrect Dawn.

Returning (with Dawns skull) to Loftwick and hiring a Cleric, the party watch as the holy man regenerates Dawns body to its former state.

Dawn tells of the imminent invasion of the Sommlend Duchy by Hades and his minions. I think Craig was sick of DMing so I took over again. Either that or we couldn't bear to die at the hands of the Drow again.
The party teleport to Toleim and from there journey to the Daemons Crown deep in the Elder mountains. Keelin remains in Greyhawk.

Entering the crown, the party overcome many minor Daemons to discover a gate leading to Hades kingdom - Tarterus.

Passing through the gate, the party journey through Tarterus encountering many Daemons and legendary beasts (including Cerebus, Charon the boatman and the Furies).

Outside the gates of Hades mansion, the party find the souls of Robert Durund and Caradin Stormdale.

Pressing into the mansion, the party slay Hades himself, thus freeing the souls of all those killed by him.

Leaving Tarterus, the party, Robert and Caradin return victoriously to Toleim. Arriving in Toleim, Robert pardons Wilfred for his actions and resumes his position as king.

Caradin is reunited with his wife Niva.

Leah, Telo, Keelin and Dawn return to Greyhawk. They spend some time journeying around the wild coast. During this period, Leah sits on a magic throne and his Charisma is increased to 19 and his Comeliness to 21. Keelin establishes a castle in the Gnarley forest. Unfortunately, the castle is built on top of a gate leading to the abyss. Keelin soon abandons his stronghold. The party travel to Longspear and persuade Gregor to journey with them back into the fire giant lair.

(Craig resumes DMing).

Entering the giant kings lair the party find the king, Snurre, and kill him.

Finding a new set of caves, the party encounter many drow elves.

Gregor is turned to stone by a Gorgon. Leah defeats a red dragon and finds a magical scroll - turn stone to flesh. Gregor is returned to normal.

The party penetrate further into the cave system. Telo is killed in a drow ambush, Gregor and Keelin are killed by mind-flayers.

Leah and Dawn escape southwards from Smaugs lair into the sea of dust.

Many months later Leah and Dawn arrive in Keoland in the city of Gradsul by way of sea. There they travel to Niole Dra and join the king of Keolands army, to fight against the hordes of giants descending from the Crystalmists for revenge.
Leah and Dawn lead a force against the giants army. Dawn is captured by the giants, but the giants are driven from the field. Our first Battlesytem war game.

Leah meets up with Grumble Firebreath (E Fi/Mu), Beek Gwenders (1/2E Ra), Mishelle Platille (Hu Cl) and Elinor Quickfoot (E Mu/Th). The foursome return to Smaugs lair and explore the rest of the cave system.

Entering the system, the party after fighting many drow elves, find a massive tunnel leading deep into the earth.
Following the tunnel for many days (encountering drow elves, gargoyles and beholders on the way), the party discovers a colony of Bugbears living in part of the tunnel.

Disturbing the remains of a skeleton, the party do battle with a powerful Lich - Asberdies.

Asbedies escapes, but not before Elinor, Beek and Mishelle are drawn into a rift of the astral plane. All are lost. Elinor steps into a portable hole while carrying a bag of holding - oops.

Leah and Grumble escape from the endless tunnel and teleport to a great castle, the home of the mage Grimrod (the valley of the mage), a friend of Grumble.

In return to a fine song by Leah, Grimrod presents him with a magical tankard which always remains full of ale, and agrees to rescue Dawn from the drow.

Grimrod enters the drow city and rescues Dawn from the torturers chamber. However, Dawn has lost his left arm, the result of a Drow curse.

The above three entries are a simplified version of what actually happened. I think what actually happened was that Leah and another party (which probably included Eugene), entered the Drow realm, managed to penetrate all the way to the Demonweb pits, but found it was just too hard. Craig took pity on them and teleported them all to Grimrod's great castle where everything got tidied up.

Leah, Grumble and Dawn teleport to Doriath.

Grumble retires to Arathgals tower which he claims as his own.

Dawn returns to his home Toleim and retires.

Caradin, while on a hunting expedition disappears. His body is never found.

The drow elves and their allies take over the whole of the kingdoms of Greyhawk. Craig decides he doesn't like the campaign setting anymore and writes it off completely (for the first but definitely not the last time).

Leah retires to Lindens thieves guild in Doriath at the age of 20.

That was the history of Leah and those who travelled with him up until the first retirement. The 'first retirement' marks the point we all decided to let our favourite characters die gracefully and represented probably two or three years of solid gaming. However, it wasn't long before more adventuring was undertaken and they all came out of retirement at one stage or another. Here is a brief summary of the latter adventures of Leah, Caradin and Dawn as best I can remember it. I can't remember it all that well because the adventures they undertook from this stage on were mostly one-off things (i.e., Craig found a high level adventure in one of his magazines he wanted to try out):

Caradin reappeared and went campaigning by himself briefly, only to be caught in a temporal stasis spell while exploring an evil wizards tomb. He was eventually rescued by Leah (who was doing the same solo adventure). He then joined up with a band of adventurers who started exploring the desert lands to the west of Toleim. There he was captured by a noble Efreet and transported to the elemental plane of fire where to this day he struggles to escape. One day I'll make up another move. I promise.

Dawn went north from Toleim and established the town of Lauvlin (not sure if the name is right). During the course of these adventures he came across an artifact arm which gives him several magical powers. He also founded an order of knighthood called the Order of the Silver Gauntlet (I think). While exploring a complex inhabited by kobolds Dawn was hit by multiple explosive gems and killed. I wasn't there but rumour has it he took (or failed to take), over four hundred points of damage in one round. What a way to go.

Leah came out of retirement briefly, and managed to rescue Caradin from the evil wizards tower. He then went back to living in Doriath for a time. Later, he and another band of adventurers, including Groves (Hu Dr) travelled to the elemental plane of fire to try and rescue Caradin. They let the chance slip through their fingers however, and returned to the material plane unsuccessful. Leah then went back into retirement where he resides happily in Doriath with Linden
